Ceramic heaters

Ceramic heater technology, explained

Quick answer

Ceramic heaters use ceramic plates that heat up within seconds, plus a fan that spreads the warmth evenly around the room.

Ceramic vs coil vs oil-filled

  • Ceramic: fast warm-up, even heat, compact
  • Exposed coil: hot surfaces, uneven heat
  • Oil-filled: slow to warm up, heavy and bulky
Ceramic heater technology, explained

How ceramic heaters work

A ceramic heater uses plates made of a special ceramic (often called PTC, positive temperature coefficient). As the plates warm up, their electrical resistance rises, which naturally limits how hot they can get. That's one reason ceramic heaters are popular for small rooms.

A fan then blows air over the warm plates and into the room. You get warm air quickly, rather than waiting for a heavy unit to slowly warm up.

Ceramic heater pros and cons

  • Pro: heats up within seconds, warm air within minutes
  • Pro: compact and light, easy to move
  • Pro: self-limiting plates and even, fan-driven warmth
  • Con: a fan makes a soft hum (RapidHeat ~45 dB)
  • Con: best for small to medium rooms, not whole homes

Ceramic vs infrared vs oil-filled

Infrared heaters warm the people and objects in front of them, which is great for spot heating but can feel uneven across a room. Oil-filled radiators are silent and hold their heat well, but they're heavy and slow to warm up.

Ceramic sits in the middle: quick, compact and good at warming the air in a small room. If you want a room warm fast and don't want a bulky unit, ceramic is usually the best fit.

Why RapidHeat fits

  • Plugs straight into a wall outlet, so there's nothing to install
  • Ceramic heating with 400W and 800W modes
  • Digital thermostat, remote control and timer
  • Quiet at around 45 dB
  • Overheat protection and automatic shut-off
  • Suits rooms up to about 250 sq ft (≈23 m²)

What it costs to run

Maximum cost at full power, for common electricity prices per kWh in your own currency. With the thermostat cycling off once the room is warm, real costs are often lower. Try the energy cost calculator with your exact price.

Who RapidHeat is not for

We'd rather you buy the right heater than return the wrong one. RapidHeat isn't the best choice for:

  • Heating a whole house or open-plan floor on its own
  • Large rooms over about 250 sq ft (≈23 m²) with just one unit (use two or more)
  • Bathrooms or anywhere it could get splashed with water
  • People who want silent, fan-free heat (try an oil-filled radiator)

Common questions

Are ceramic heaters safer than other heaters?

Ceramic plates limit their own temperature, and RapidHeat adds overheat protection and auto shut-off. Any heater still needs to be used carefully: wall outlet only, clear space around it, no water.

How much does RapidHeat cost to run?

At full power RapidHeat uses 0.4 kWh per hour on Low (400W) or 0.8 kWh per hour on High (800W). Multiply that by your electricity price per kWh. At 0.25 per kWh that's 0.10 per hour on Low and 0.20 per hour on High. The thermostat cycles it off once the room is warm, so real use is often lower.

What size room will one RapidHeat heat?

One unit suits rooms up to about 250 sq ft (≈23 m²), such as a bedroom, home office or small living area. For bigger or draughty rooms, use two or more units in different parts of the room.

Is it noisy?

RapidHeat runs at around 45 dB, which is roughly as loud as a quiet library or a soft hum. Most people can sleep or take calls next to it.

Do ceramic heaters dry out the air?

Like all electric heaters, they warm the air, which can make it feel drier. A glass of water nearby or a humidifier helps if that bothers you.
